Bunnies in the Morning, Pigeons in the Afternoon

I look forward to this time of year. The days get colder and shorter, so I’m traveling to and from work in the dark. I prefer the dark. I prefer the cold as well. I probably should move to some Scandanavian country to retire.

On the way to work, every morning, I walk from the car park to the office, through grassy fields and small parks. Inevitably there are bunnies happily grazing. Sometimes they scatter when they hear my footfalls, although they don’t need to. They don’t know that I mean them no harm. I sometimes stand and watch them, in awe of their simplicity and beauty, in spite of the general view that they’re vermin. On rare occasions, when I remember to, I’ll get some carrots and toss them over to the bunnies.

Then when I get to work, I go up to the roof and drop some feed for the pigeons. They aren’t around yet, but they will be when the sun rises. I’ll sprinkle seeds for the flock that comes every day. Then I go down to the grass and do the same for the mated pair that come there. It was better before they cut down the tree. Later, I go out and watch them eat from afar. Although some of them come close to me if I go up to the roof, they will scatter if I get too close. I watch them and listen to their gentle cooing noises.

I’ve always had a preference for the company of animals, any animals, over the company of humans. I’ll go out of my way for animals, but not so much for humans. Animals have a simple way about them; there’s hardly any complexity there. I do have to say trying to figure out what’s going on with my cats can leave me puzzled, however. I seem to trust the animal world more as well. They don’t deviate from their basic nature very much, unless driven by extreme situations. Even the rats around the building, I know they’re there, get more respect from me than the casual human walking down the street. I’ve always been this way. A victim of the primal nature.
